EXCLUSIVE!!! The ‘mathematics’ of the filling station business - Our list of Filling stations and Tankfarms for sale/lease!!!

Presently, the pump price of Petrol is N97 per litre, diesel cost about N150 per litre, and kerosene cost N130 per litre. The depot price of Petroleum Product marketing Company, PPMC, the business arm of NNPC, a litre of petrol is N87.66. This means that a filling station operator will gain N9.34 per litre of petrol bought from the depot and sold at the pump price. For a tanker of 30,000 litres, the operator will make a gross profit of N280, 200. The depot price of diesel of N130 per litre also gives a profit margin of N20 per litre for each operator. In a tanker of 30,000 litres supplied to a filling station, the operator will make a gross profit of N600, 000. For kerosene, the depot price is N102 per litre while the pump price is N130 per litre. There is a profit margin of N18 per litre for the operator. In a 30,000 capacity tanker of Kerosene, the gross profit is N540, 000. For the sale of a full tanker of 30,000 litres each of kerosene, diesel, and petrol, a filling station operator makes a gross profit of N1, 420, 200.

It is clear that for a filling station owner, volume of product sold directly affects the profit he/she makes. This is because the  business overheads: salaries, power generation, Government levies etc. are more or less fixed and so if you can push your sales, the profit will go up. Sales is a factor of location (the best location gets more customers) and capacity (the more pumps, if you have the customers, means more sales as even if you have the customers but no pumps, there’s a limit you can sell).

The brand of the station also affects its patronage and therefore its turnover. There are two types of operators of filling stations: Dependent Marketers and Independent Marketers. A Dependent Marketer holds a franchise of a major oil marketer. His facilities are fully branded by the major marketers. The major marketers are the established brands like Texaco, Mobile, AP, Oando, Total, etc. The dependent marketer builds his business under the ‘umbrella’ of the major marketer. The advantage is that the dependant will be riding on the back of the chosen major marketer and inherit their customer base within the business location, and as they keep marketing their brand, the dependant keeps making business from the popularity of the brand. Another advantage is that the dependant will have products delivered directly to his filling station and on time by the chosen major marketer as they already have the logistics. But it has its disadvantage; the dependant will miss the opportunity of building his own brand and he must follow the dictates of the oil marketing company.

The Independent Oil Marketer owns and runs his business, buys products directly from NNPC and has a representative at PPMC depot by NNPC. He can build his own brand and marketing logistics. His disadvantage he bears the burden of transporting the fuel from the depot to his filling station. Also generally, motorists prefer buying from the major brands than the independents.

Another way filling station owners can push turnover is by selling other items/services to persons who come to buy petrol (engine oil, tyre services are quite popular)   or use their vantage position to rent out shops/stalls to others (some fast food restaurants are located in petrol stations)
